"Getting Published" Workshop

You should publish that!

Are you keen, but have little idea of where to begin? Should you publish a journal article? Have you considered publishing the research you are doing (or did) for your Masters or Ph.D? If so, which journal? What format should the article be in? How do you decide? What is the best way to approach book publishers? What are they looking for?

If you have any of these questions then come to a special workshop that will address them. All of the speakers have considerable experience in academic publishing, both in monographs and peer-reviewed journals.

Getting your ideas published

Registered participants should come ready to give a 3-5 minute presentation, briefly describing a current research project, and possible plans to publish it. Bringing a draft manuscript (or at least an outline) is highly desirable.

The goal is that by the end of the workshop participants will be matched up with a senior academic who will act as a mentor to help reach this goal.

This half-day workshop will provide tips and encouragement for academics and post-graduate students at theological colleges and universities who would like to publish in international peer-reviewed journals, monographs, and commentaries. Younger scholars will be paired with mentors who have experience in academic publishing.  This workshop will run on the morning of the first day (9.30am–1:00pm Tuesday 29th June).

The speakers for Getting Published include:

Jim Eisenbraun  Jim is qualified to speak on two aspects of the publication process. On the one hand, he is CEO of Eisenbrauns Books. On the other hand, he has studied under the eminent Hebrew scholar Dr David Noel Freedman. Jim will speak on getting published from a publisher’s perspective.

Dr Michael F. Bird  Since receiving his PhD in 2005, Mike has published more than thirty journal articles and eight books (publishers include Zondervan, Eerdmans, IVP, T&T Clark and Paternoster). Mike also writes a popular biblical studies blog (euangelizomai.blogspot.com). He will speak on the subject From Concept to Publication.  Mike has recently returned from the UK to lecture in Systematic Theology at the Bible College of Queensland, Brisbane.

Professor Ross McKenzie  Ross has co-author of  more than 100 articles in international scientific journals. He has also published papers on science and theology, including a paper in the Scottish Journal of Theology. Ross is author of two blogs:
condensedconcepts.blogspot.com about his scientific research interests (academic career advice) and Soli Deo Gloria (revelation4-11.blogspot.com). Ross will speak on The Why of Publishing at a Peer Review Level.  Ross is a Professor of Physics at the University of Queensland.

Dr Bruce Winter
Bruce is currently Principal of Queensland Theological College. He was Warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge for many years. During that time he was editor of the Tyndale Bulletin, advised many students on publishing their PhD's, and was a consultant to William B. Eerdmans publishing company. Bruce has authored several monographs in New Testament studies.
